Integrated Development Programs

Cambodia faces daunting challenges in combating poverty and illiteracy. With approximately one-third of the population living below the poverty line, Cambodia is one the poorest countries in South-East Asia. It is ranked 140th out 174 countries developing countries based on the human development index ranking. This situation is complicated by a relatively low literacy rate and a high disease burden.

At the sametime, the country’s health status and education profile is one of the most discouraging in the region, and illness together with the high costs of medical care and access to education result in further impoverishment of the poor.

Integrated Development Programmes (IDP) - this project in its entirety will meet the most basic needs of its target groups. Giving the villagers a variety of means to increase their income, the project helps them go beyond the poverty line and thereby improve their quality of live. As it has been outlined, many of these villagers are from a farming background. Therefore a focus on agricultural inputs is relevant for their existing skills as well as a proven ad direct way of increasing food supplies  the household. Given their current knowledge and levels of education, it is clear that the activities need to be simple but effective in improving their quality of live. The income generating activities are easy for all to understand and partake in. This ensures the participation of any villager in the scheme without discrimination.

The project seeks to meet the following objectives:

  • Increase management capacity and development skills for the community and improve income and livelihood of communities.
  • Raise awareness on the appropriate community oriented utilization of forests and increase agricultural production.
  • Increase literacy rate and improve the general health situation of villagers by increasing their accessibility to safe drinking water.
  • Strengthen community development mechanisms through the formation of Farmers’ association.

The project is currently within from 2005 to 2008. Please click here to see the final report. For more you can also obtain from Report buttom.
